Wow, finally my dream will come true - the team at iRobot has created a robot development kit that allows you to customize your very own robot. The winner of a contest supported by iRobot, the iRobot challenge - designed a robot that can control appliances, water plants, turn off lights (a necessity for any household with kids), and play music. This may be somewhat of an eye test - but it is available in full size on the Instructables.com website. A robot constructed from this platform could also water pets, remind you to take your medicine, dance, and sweep the rugs. A WiFi connection allows Internet control, which means you could also use it as a remote security device.
What a great way to introduce children to the wonderful world of electronics! I am going to see how much they cost, and buy one as a family project if not too expensive!
